Neonatal Cardiac Screening

The Global Health Initiative is a program created in 2020 in partnership with the Department of Global Health at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami , which seeks to reduce infant motility through neonatal cardiac screening performed within the first 24 hours of a newborn’s life.

Our Impact

How do we do it?
Neonatal cardiac screening by pulse oximetry is performed after 24 hours of life. This procedure is essential for detecting cardiac malformations in newborns. It consists of measuring the baby’s oxygen saturation using a soft sensor placed on the right upper limb and on any lower limb.
This noninvasive method measures the level of oxygen in the blood, which is crucial for identifying congenital heart defects that may go undetected in the first days of life. Detecting these conditions early allows for timely intervention, reducing infant mortality and significantly improving the prognosis and quality of life of affected newborns.
